Aaron Russell backed-up his coach calling him a top-three outside attacker in the nation and got Penn State back into the NCAA Tournament semifinals.
Russell had a match-high 20 kills as the No. 5 seed Penn State defeated the No. 4 seed Lewis 27-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-19 in the NCAA Tournament play-in match on Tuesday in Chicago.

The long awaited expansion to the NCAA Tournament will finally be experienced tonight.
The inaugural NCAA Tournament play-in matches will begin with the No. 3 seed Stanford and its lengthy history of NCAA Tournament success playing the No. 6 seed Erskine in its first NCAA Tournament appearance. In addition, after Lewis getting a controversial at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament it will play Penn State in the other play-in match.
The NCAA Tournament selection committee isn’t backing down from its decision to give Lewis an at-large bid.
Selection committee chairman Ron Shayka said in an exclusive interview with Off the Block on Monday that Lewis became the first non-West Coast school in 20 years to earn an at-large bid in part because of it’s difficult non-conference schedule.
Four months of non-stop college men’s volleyball from across the nation has all led up to the start of the NCAA Tournament.
