  • Former Pepperdine standout Hulse named assistant coach at Loyola

    A former Pepperdine and Rutgers-Newark men’s volleyball player will join the Loyola coaching staff for the upcoming season.

    The Loyola athletics department announced Wednesday that Mark Hulse was hired as an assistant coach for the 2012 season.

    Hulse graduated from Pepperdine in 2009 after a four-year college career and most recently was the head coach of the D1 Chicago Volleyball Club, a nationally competitive 18-year-old boys’ team.

  • Ohio State releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

    A potential rematch of last season’s national title match and playing home matches against two MPSF schools highlights the 2012 Ohio State regular season schedule that the team released Tuesday.

    Ohio State won 2011 NCAA championship and became to the first Midwest school in NCAA men’s volleyball history to legally win the national title. The Buckeyes have three returning starters for the upcoming season, including All-American outside attacker Shawn Sangrey.

  • Quincy releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

    A seven-match homestand to close out the season and four road matches against teams from the Conference Carolinas highlights the 2012 Quincy regular season schedule that the team released Thursday.

    Quincy ended last season in sixth place in the MIVA and reached the conference tournament semifinals for the first time in program history. The Hawks have four starters returning for the upcoming season, including outside attacker Joseph Sokol who led the team in kills last year.

  • Multiple All-American Werle to join former coach’s staff at Grand Canyon

    A former National Player of the Year winner will join the Grand Canyon coaching staff this upcoming season.

    The Grand Canyon athletics department announced Wednesday that Matt Werle was hired as a men’s volleyball assistant coach for the 2012 season.

    Werle as a junior was named the 2007 AVCA Division III National Player of the Year after helping lead Juniata to its fourth consecutive Molten Division III national championship, a non-sanctioned NCAA event. The setter was also a four-time All-American while at Juniata playing for current Grand Canyon coach Jeremy Price.

  • Lindenwood beefs up 2012 schedule in preparation of joining NCAA

    One year away from joining the NCAA, the NAIA national finalists Lindenwood increased the strength of its 2012 schedule with more NCAA opponents.

    Lindenwood last week released its schedule for the upcoming season that will feature 11 matches against NCAA Division I-II teams — a five-match increase from the previous season.

    Lindenwood is entering second year of a four-year transition period from the NAIA to becoming a NCAA Division II member. This will be the final season that Lindenwood will compete in the NAIA before becoming a provisional NCAA member for the 2013 men’s volleyball season.

  • Lewis releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

    Six non-conference matches against teams likely to be nationally ranked highlights Lewis’ 2012 season as the team Wednesday released its regular season schedule for the upcoming season.

    Lewis finished last season No. 13 in the final coaches poll and lost to the NCAA champions Ohio State in the MIVA Tournament semifinals. Flyers coach Dan Friend has six starters returning for last year’s team, including First-Team All-MIVA outside attacker Jay Petty.

  • Big Ten Network to rebroadcast Ohio State vs. UC Santa Barbara title match

    A national cable network will rebroadcast Ohio State winning its first national championship.

    The 2011 NCAA national championship match between Ohio State and UC Santa Barbara will be rebroadcasted at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday on the Big Ten Network.

    The No. 3 seed Ohio State defeated the No. 4 seed UC Santa Barbara in five games in May to win its first national title in program history. With the victory, the Buckeyes also became the first Midwest men’s volleyball team to legally win a NCAA championship.

  • UCLA, Lewis, Springfield in, Penn State out for 2012 Outrigger Invitational

    One of the biggest men’s volleyball non-conference tournaments will have a different look from previous seasons in 2012.

    Hawai’i coach Charlie Wade said Thursday that UCLA, Lewis and Springfield College will play in the 2012 Outrigger Invitational in January. It is the first time in the 17-year history of the Hawai’i home tournament that Springfield College will play in it and the first time for Lewis since 2005.

    “There is no shortage of teams that want to come out here and play in Hawaii,” Wade said. “It’s going to be fun to play them, and it’s going to be fun for our fans to see some nice teams come out that they don’t normally get to see.”

  • NCAA awards prestigious scholarship to former Ball State player Nelson

    A former Ball State All-American middle attacker received a prestigious NCAA scholarship to help continue his education.

    The Ball State athletics department announced Wednesday that Anders Nelson was named a recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

    The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship is a one-time $7,5000 scholarship awarded to a student-athlete based on their athletic and academic achievements, leadership skills, community service and campus involvement. The NCAA awards up to 48 scholarships to student-athlets in each of the fall, winter and spring college sports seasons.

  • Ball State vs. IPFW rivalry ranked one of best Indiana sporting events

    The Ball State and IPFW men’s volleyball rivalry is among the top 10 best sporting events in Indiana, according to a recent newspaper poll.

    The News-Sentinel, a national award winning newspaper in Fort Wayne, Ind., ranked the Cardinals and Mastodons rivalry on Tuesday the seventh best sporting event that a Hoosier should attend in their lifetime.

    Ball State and IPFW are the only two Division I-II men’s volleyball teams in Indiana and have combined to win 26 MIVA championships.
