  • George Mason’s aggressive fundraising leads to $5K reward from alum

    A successful fundraising campaign for the George Mason men’s volleyball team resulted in the program receiving a $5,000 one-time donation from an alumnus.

    The Patriots athletics department announced last week that the George Mason men’s volleyball team surpassed all other teams in a recent fundraising campaign and was rewarded with a $5,000 donation for finishing in first place.

    The Ten for Ten Alumni-Athlete Fundraising Challenge pitted each team’s former athletes against each other to help raise money for the George Mason athletics department.

  • Volleyball Hall of Fame announces 4-team tournament field for 2012 Morgan Classic

    For the first time in the history of the Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic, a team from the Conference Carolinas will compete in the non-conference tournament.

    The Volleyball Hall of Fame informed Off the Block during the weekend that Lees-McRae is one of the four teams selected to play in the 2012 Morgan Classic Invitational.

    Along with Lees-McRae, Springfield, UC Santa Cruz and the defending-tournament champions Cal Baptist will play in the Morgan Classic on Feb. 10-11, 2012, in Massachusetts.

  • Former Highlander setter Trevino named assistant coach at NJIT

    One of the best men’s volleyball setters in NJIT history will return to the team as an assistant coach.

    The NJIT athletics department announced Wednesday that it hired Pedro Trevino to join the Highlanders’ coaching staff for the upcoming season.

    Trevino, a four-year starting setter from 1997-2000, finished his final two season with NJIT in the nation’s top 10 in assists per game average and was selected to the All-EIVA team.

  • France leaves Rutgers-Newark, returns to NYU as assistant coach

    After spending four years as the Rutgers-Newark head coach, Karl France is returning to NYU.

    The Division III school announced Monday that it has hired France for the second time in his career to be an assistant coach on the NYU men’s volleyball team.

    “I am very happy to be back working with Coach [Jose] Pina,” France said in a statement released Monday. “We work well together and have had success in the past. I feel that with the added excitement of a NCAA Division III Men’s Volleyball Championship and a solid nucleus returning, the sky is the limit for NYU men’s volleyball.”

  • Sacred Heart releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about the schedule

    The first schedule for a team in the new-look EIVA is out as Sacred Heart announced its 2012 regular season schedule earlier this week.

    Sacred Heart, along with the other seven EIVA teams, will play 14 conference matches — a four match increase from last season.

    The Pioneers last season finished in third place in the EIVA Hay Division and failed to qualify for the EIVA Tournament. Sacred Heart have four starters returning, including outside attacker Enzo Mackenzie who was named to the Second-Team All-EIVA as a freshman.

  • Stanford, Rutgers-Newark receive AVCA award for academic excellence

    Two NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball teams received a team national academic honor.

    The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced Thursday that Rutgers-Newark and Stanford earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2010-11 season.

    To be eligible for this award a college or high school volleyball team must have at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or have a 4.10 GPA on a 5.0 scale.

  • UCLA, Lewis, Springfield in, Penn State out for 2012 Outrigger Invitational

    One of the biggest men’s volleyball non-conference tournaments will have a different look from previous seasons in 2012.

    Hawai’i coach Charlie Wade said Thursday that UCLA, Lewis and Springfield College will play in the 2012 Outrigger Invitational in January. It is the first time in the 17-year history of the Hawai’i home tournament that Springfield College will play in it and the first time for Lewis since 2005.

    “There is no shortage of teams that want to come out here and play in Hawaii,” Wade said. “It’s going to be fun to play them, and it’s going to be fun for our fans to see some nice teams come out that they don’t normally get to see.”

  • AVCA releases 2011 high school boy’s volleyball All-American team

    Twenty incoming freshmen were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association High School Senior All-American Team on Wednesday.

    UC Irvine, Loyola and Pepperdine led all teams with two players selected as a First-Team All-American. Cal State Northridge also had a First-Team and Second-Team All-American selection, while UC San Diego had two players named Second-Team All-Americans.

    USC, Ohio State, Lewis, BYU, Juniata and Princeton each had one incoming recruit selected as an All-American.

  • EIVA to reduce conference tournament to 4 teams starting next season

    The EIVA Tournament will be more difficult for teams to make starting in 2012.

    The EIVA voted at its annual league meeting to reduce its conference tournament from seven to four teams next season.

    “This puts an emphasis on the regular season,” Penn State coach Mark Pavlik said. “You got to be at your best through the EIVA regular season schedule to be in the top four and hopefully that creates competition among the eight teams.”
