  • Projected preseason top 10 national rankings: No. 4 Penn State

    Penn State is projected by Off the Block to be No. 4 in the preseason national rankings.

    Off the Block throughout December will reveal its projected men’s volleyball preseason top 10 national rankings and will profile a top-10 team each day. The Off the Block projected preseason rankings were created independently of the AVCA Coaches Poll and the Volleyball Magazine Top 10 Media Poll.

    The college men’s volleyball season begins on Jan. 3 and concludes with the Final Four in May.

  • NCAA temporarily suspends new student-athlete stipend program

    The NCAA has suspended its new initiative that would allow student-athletes to receive additional financial benefits from the school.

    The NCAA announced Thursday that it has temporarily shelved its new policy that gave schools the option to give full-ride scholarship student-athletes up to a $2,000 stipend for cost-of-living expanses.

  • Penn State projected to win EIVA title in conference preseason poll

    The defending-EIVA champions Penn State was picked to win its 14th consecutive conference title in the upcoming season.

    The Nittany Lions received all but one first-place vote and finished atop the EIVA Preseason Coaches Poll that the conference released Monday.

  • EIVA issues statement of support for Penn State men’s volleyball

    With the Penn State football team and university in the midst of a sexual-abuse scandal, the EIVA is fully supporting the Nittany Lions men’s volleyball team.

    EIVA commissioner Ivan Marque issued a statement Monday that praised the Penn State men’s volleyball team and its head coach Mark Pavlik for the program’s quality, accountability and integrity.

  • 2012 Off the Block Preseason All-American Teams released

    A nationwide voting committee selected 21 players to the Off the Block Preseason All-American Teams.

    The Off the Block Preseason All-American Teams recognizes the Division I-II men’s volleyball players projected to be the best in the nation during the upcoming season. Ten players were selected as Preseason First-Team All-Americans and 11 players were named Preseason Second-Team All-Americans.

  • St. Francis looks to add height with new recruiting class

    A high school all-section player and a former member of a United States national youth team who are both taller than 6-foot-4-inches have committed to play at St. Francis

    St. Francis announced Wednesday that high school seniors Michael Marshman and Drew Grehan have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Red Flash beginning in the 2013 season.

  • Penn State, Stanford ranked toughest non-conference schedules

    Penn State will play the toughest non-conference schedule this upcoming season, according to a college men’s volleyball ranking system.

    The Nittany Lions have the hardest schedule in the Off the Block Relative Strength Factor Non-conference Preseason Rankings that were released Wednesday.

  • Thanksgiving 2011: 11 things to be thankful about in college volleyball

    It is the week of giving thanks and college men’s volleyball followers and fans can be thankful about plenty of things in the sport.

    Whether it is a playoff format to determine a champion or the individuals returning for the upcoming season, there are many good things happening in the sport right now. It’s now time to give thanks to some of those things in college men’s volleyball.

  • George Mason releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

    Non-conference matches against USC and Pepperdine and a rematch against Penn State highlights the 2012 George Mason regular season schedule that the team released Tuesday.

    The Patriots finished last season in second place in the EIVA Tait Division and advanced to the conference tournament semifinals. George Mason has four starters returning for the upcoming season, including All-EIVA outside attacker Mark Jones.

  • D-II men’s volleyball teams ineligible for new NCAA scholarship benefits

    Five Division II men’s volleyball teams, despite playing in a conference with Division I schools, would be prohibited from providing an additional $2,000 to its full-ride scholarship athletes.

    The NCAA informed Off the Block via email Thursday that its newly adopted scholarship policy only applies to Division I schools, and Division II schools regardless of conference affiliations would be ineligible from giving their players the extra benefit.

    The NCAA Division I Board of Directors voted last week to allow schools to provide full-scholarship athletes up to an extra $2,000 for cost-of-living expenses. Schools would not be required to add the benefit, but the NCAA requested that conferences consider common applications.
