  • Tournament field revealed for Off the Block Player Fan Choice Player of the Year

    Sixty-five players have been selected for the Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year tournament field.

    The Fan Choice Player of the Year recognizes the best individual performances from NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball players during the season and gives volleyball fans from around the world the chance to determine who was the best player.

  • The challenge to grow the college men’s volleyball game

    [Editor’s note: This article was written by Joe McIntyre, who agreed to have the article be published on Off the Block. McIntyre, the 2011 EIVA Reporter of the Year, is a recent Penn State graduate and a former college volleyball reporter for The Daily Collegian.]

    If the entrance doors are open, the sounds echoing from the gym can be heard for what seems like miles. The smacking and walloping of a volleyball, the grunting and feet-slamming on the court when a player finally lands after reaching sometimes more than 12 feet in the air.

  • The 2012 Blockys: Honoring the best and oddest in college volleyball

    Ten days since the season ended, and the college men’s volleyball withdrawal has set in.

    In an effort to battle this withdrawal and help to put a wrap on the season that was, Off the Block is introducing the Blockys. The Blockys are Off the Block editor Vinnie Lopes’ awards recognizing the good, the bad, the goofy and the odd in college volleyball.

    More than 100 Blockys were awarded this year in seven categories: social media, media, players, coaches, arena and crowds, matches and miscellaneous. Check out the inaugural 2012 Blocky winners.

  • Attendance higher for men’s than women’s volleyball at most schools

    More colleges experienced bigger home crowds for men’s volleyball matches than women’s volleyball matches during the recent school year.

    Nineteen of the nation’s 35 schools with both a women’s volleyball team and a Division I-II men’s volleyball team had a higher home attendance average for men’s volleyball, according to athletic department attendance numbers collected during the 2011-12 school year.

  • USC’s Ferguson wins 2012 AVCA National Coach of the Year

    Bill Ferguson for the second time in the last four years is the national coach of the year.

    The USC head coach was named the 2012 AVCA Men’s Division I-II National Coach of the Year on Monday after leading the Trojans to a conference regular season title and the NCAA championship match.

  • BYU concludes 2012 season with nation’s best home attendance

    BYU has won the national attendance battle for the 2012 NCAA men’s volleyball season.

    The Cougars ended the season averaging a nation-best 3,192 people per home match — the only Division I-II men’s volleyball team in the nation to average more than 3,000 people in attendance per match.

  • ‘Rip ‘Em,’ now Crown ‘Em: UC Irvine sweeps USC to win NCAA title

    The best serving team in the nation saved its biggest serve for when it mattered most.

    Middle attacker Dan McDonnell had a match-winning ace in the third game overtime as UC Irvine swept USC 25-22, 34-32, 26-24 on Saturday in Los Angeles to win the 2012 NCAA championship.

  • NCAA Tournament men’s volleyball championship match to follow tonight

    It’s all come down to one match and one night to determine the 2012 NCAA championship.

    Both UC Irvine and USC were ranked No. 1 in the national ranking during the regular season. However, both teams will now play in the NCAA Tournament championship match with the national title on the line.

  • Lewis vs. USC highest attended NCAA Tourney semifinal since 2008

    The Lewis and USC match Thursday was one of the highest attended men’s volleyball NCAA Tournament semifinal matches in recent history.

    The 4,375 people in attendance to watch the No. 2 seed USC defeat the No. 3 seed Lewis on Thursday was the largest crowd for a men’s volleyball NCAA Tournament semifinal match in four years.
