Q&A with NCAA Tournament selection committee chairman Ron Shayka

Chairman Ron Shayka is the first to admit his fellow selection committee members and him face unprecedented challenges in the sport’s history for the upcoming men’s volleyball NCAA Tournament.

With a new postseason format, Shayka said in an interview with Off the Block earlier this week that the committee is having to figure out everything from difficult team travel logistics to awarding at-large bids in tight and large field of bubble teams.

UC Irvine associate AD added to NCAA Tourney selection committee

The deputy athletics director from UC Irvine will join the committee that determines the field for the men’s volleyball NCAA Tournament.

UC Irvine senior associate athletics director Paula Smith was selected as the West Coast representative for the three-person NCAA men’s volleyball committee.

Committee receives 21 bids to host future men’s volleyball NCAA Tournaments

The bids are officially all in from schools vying to host the men’s volleyball Division I-II NCAA Tournament in upcoming years.

NCAA officials informed Off the Block via email Tuesday that 21 bids were submitted to the league office requesting the right to host a college men’s volleyball national championship during the next five years.

NCAA to pay team expenses for newly created play-in match

The NCAA will be picking up the tab for the inaugural men’s volleyball NCAA Tournament play-in match this upcoming season.

The NCAA’s Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet voted last week to modify its policy on play-in matches and will begin to start paying for all team expenses associated with new postseason match.
