Hawai’i will enter its pivotal series against UC Irvine ahead in a critical bracketology category
The Rainbow Warriors jumped to No. 5, a spot above the Anteaters, in the latest RPI rankings that the NCAA released on Monday.
A team’s RPI ranking is calculated using a mathematical formula that includes its winning percentage, strength of schedule and opponents’ strength of schedule. It also is one of the criteria categories the selection committee uses to determine the NCAA Tournament field.
UC Irvine dropped down one spot in the new rankings after splitting a home-and-home series against CSUN during the weekend. Hawai’i swept a two-match series against UC Santa Barbara during the weekend and has now won three of its last four matches.
UC Irvine will play host to Hawai’i in a two-match conference series starting on Friday. The Anteaters enter the series in second place in the Big West and two matches ahead of the third-place Rainbow Warriors in the conference standings.
UCLA remains atop the RPI rankings for the third consecutive week. Long Beach State moved ahead of Grand Canyon to No. 2 in the rankings, while Grand Canyon dropped one spot to No. 3.
An updated RPI rankings will be released each Monday throughout the regular season and conference tournaments. The final RPI rankings will be unveiled on Selection Sunday.
