Fear the Fleet: Erskine sweeps Mount Olive to earn berth to NCAA Tournament

In its program’s second year, Erskine is heading to the NCAA Tournament.

Outside attacker Michael Michelau had a team-high four aces and 14 kills as Erskine defeated Mount Olive 25-20, 26-24, 27-25 in the Conference Carolinas Tournament championship match Wednesday in Due West, S.C., to earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.


Michelau was one of two Erskine players with double-digit kills against Mount Olive. Outside attacker Roberto Perez Vargas, who was named to the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Freshmen All-American Team earlier this week, also added 11 kills in the victory.

The Fleet entered this conference as the No. 1 seed after winning the conference regular season title. With this victory, Erskine becomes the firstteam since Princeton in 1998 to reach the NCAA Tournament in its second year as a varsity program.

This is the first year the Conference Carolinas became eligible for an automatic berth to the reformatted six-team NCAA Tournament.

Erskine will now wait to until Selection Sunday on April 27 to see who it will play in the NCAA Tournament.
