D-II men’s volleyball teams ineligible for new NCAA scholarship benefits

Five Division II men’s volleyball teams, despite playing in a conference with Division I schools, would be prohibited from providing an additional $2,000 to its full-ride scholarship athletes.

The NCAA informed Off the Block via email Thursday that its newly adopted scholarship policy only applies to Division I schools, and Division II schools regardless of conference affiliations would be ineligible from giving their players the extra benefit.

The NCAA Division I Board of Directors voted last week to allow schools to provide full-scholarship athletes up to an extra $2,000 for cost-of-living expenses. Schools would not be required to add the benefit, but the NCAA requested that conferences consider common applications.

Princeton releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

A three-match West Coast road trip and a nine-match homestand highlights the 2012 Princeton regular season schedule that the team released Thursday.

Princeton finished last season in last place in the EIVA Tait Division and did not qualify for the conference tournament. The Tigers have seven starters returning for the upcoming season, including outside attacker Jeff Stapleton.

Three Hawai’i matches to be nationally televised in upcoming season

Three Hawai’i home matches at the beginning of the 2012 season will be nationally televised.

The Hawai’i athletics department announced Tuesday that its men’s volleyball team’s matches against UC San Diego and UCLA in January will air live on Fox College Sports.

Hawai’i will open its season with a two-match series against UC San Diego on Jan. 5-6 with both matches being televised. In addition, Hawai’i will play UCLA to conclude its home non-conference tournament, the Outrigger Invitational, on Jan. 14.

Grand Canyon releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

Two matches in Hawaii and coach Jeremy Price returning to his former school highlights the 2012 Grand Canyon regular season schedule that the team released Thursday.

The Antelopes finished last season in last place in the MIVA and lost in the conference tournament quarterfinals. Grand Canyon has all seven starters returning for the upcoming season, including All-MIVA libero Trent Bruns

NJIT releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

A home match against the defending EIVA champions Penn State and a road trip to Grand Canyon highlights the NJIT 2012 regular season schedule that the team released Monday.

The Highlanders finished last season in last place in the EIVA Hay Division and failed to make the EIVA Tournament. NJIT has all seven starters returning for the upcoming season, including libero Brady Smith who finished last season in the nation’s top 10 for digs per game average.

UC San Diego releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

A month-long conference homestand and a trip to Grand Canyon highlights the UC San Diego 2012 regular season schedule as the team earlier this week released its schedule for the upcoming season.

UC San Diego finished last season tied for 10th place in the MPSF and failed to make the conference tournament. Tritons coach Kevin Ring will have four starters returning for the upcoming season, including outside attacker Carl Eberts who led the team in kills last season.

AVCA releases 2011 high school boy’s volleyball All-American team

Twenty incoming freshmen were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association High School Senior All-American Team on Wednesday.

UC Irvine, Loyola and Pepperdine led all teams with two players selected as a First-Team All-American. Cal State Northridge also had a First-Team and Second-Team All-American selection, while UC San Diego had two players named Second-Team All-Americans.

USC, Ohio State, Lewis, BYU, Juniata and Princeton each had one incoming recruit selected as an All-American.

Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year: Round 1

Off the Block created the bracket and seeded 64 of the best college men’s volleyball players. Now it’s up to you determine who should be the Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year.

The Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year tournament is the only contest that allows the fans to completely determine who should be the national player of the year.

The online voting for the 32 first-round matches will end at 11 p.m. Wednesday. The winners will advance to the second round Thursday.

Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year tournament to begin Wednesday

The Off the Block Fan Choice Player of the Year will begin Wednesday, giving fans from around the nation the opportunity to determine the best college men’s volleyball player during the 2011 season.

Off the Block has created a six-round 64-player bracket tournament matching up the best men’s volleyball players. Now it’s up to the fans through online voting to determine who should be the winner of each match-up.

Every round will last one day with the polls closing at 11 p.m. (EST). The player with the most votes when the polls close will advance to the next round.
