Pepperdine announced Wednesday that assistant coach David Hunt has resigned from his position with the Waves to become an assistant coach for the Japanese Men’s National Team.

Hunt worked on the Pepperdine coaching staff for six seasons, including spending the last four seasons as an assistant coach. The Waves in the last four years with Hunt on the sidelines reached the postseason three times and most recently advanced the 2013 MPSF Tournament quarterfinals.

Hunt also spent two years as a video coordinator and volunteer assistant coach before being promoted in 2010.

“I have never worked with anyone who has worked as well or as hard as David, ever,”Pepperdine coach Marv Dunphy said in a statement released Wednesday. “We’re going to miss him a ton, but at the same time now is his time to do something unique and challenging.”

Hunt will now join the coaching staff of Gary Soto, who was hired as the Japanese Men’s National Team head coach in February. Both Soto and Hunt are the first foreign coaches to oversee a Japanese volleyball Olympic team.

This will be Hunt’s second international coaching position in the last two years. Hunt served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Boys’ National Team that won the bronze medal at the 2012 NORCECA Boys’ Youth Continental Championship.

Japan has not qualified for the Olympics since 2008, when it went winless in pool-play.

A former Ball State men’s volleyball outside attacker will be coaching in the EIVA for the upcoming season.

The Harvard athletics department announced Wednesday that it hired Jeff Aucoin has an assistant coach for the Crimson women’s and men’s volleyball teams for the 2013-14 school year.

Aucoin transferred to Ball State for his senior season in 2012 after leading New Hamphsire to the 2011 national championship for college club volleyball and being named the tournament’s most valuable player. In his one season with Ball State, Aucoin appeared in 15 matches and helped the Cardinals reach the MIVA Tournament semifinals.

Aucoin after graduating from Ball State spent last season as an assistant coach for the New Hampshire women’s volleyball team, which finished with its first winning record in program history since 2007.

“Jeff is going to play a pivotal role for us as we work to improve and strengthen our program in the years ahead,” Harvard head coach Brian Baise, said in a statement released Wednesday. “He is multi-talented and his diverse experience will make him a very valuable addition to both coaching staffs. We are fortunate to have Jeff joining us this summer.”

The Crimson ended last season in third place in the EIVA and advanced to the conference tournament championship match for the first time in their program history. In addition, Harvard in the regular season became the first team in five years to defeat Penn State in conference play and was ranked as high as No. 14 in the national coaches poll.

Don’t expect any MPSF teams to play in the soon-to-be created men’s volleyball NCAA Tournament play-in match any time in the upcoming seasons.

NCAA men’s volleyball committee chairman Brian Santiago said at the recent MPSF league meeting that the new play-in match featuring two conference champions “will not directly impact MPSF teams,” according to the minutes released from the meeting.

The inaugural NCAA Tournament play-in match next season will include the two conference champions from the two conferences with the lowest Rating Percentage Index ranking during the 2013 season. However, the committee has yet to publicly release the formula that will be used to determine those two play-in conferences.

The MPSF historically has been the premier conference in college men’s volleyball with its 13 West Coast teams winning all but four NCAA championships. In addition, a West Coast team has received the lone at-large bid to the four-team NCAA Tournament every year expect once since men’s volleyball became a NCAA sanctioned sport in 1970.

The committee is adding NCAA Tournament play-in match as a result of the Conference Carolinas becoming eligible for the automatic bid starting in 2014. The Conference Carolinas is comprised of nine Division I-II schools in the Southeast and in 2009 became the first multi-sport conference to sponsor men’s volleyball.

Santiago in a previous interview with Off the Block said the men’s volleyball NCAA Tournament is prevented from expanded beyond its four-team format because the NCAA is in the middle of a budget cycle.

While the conferences required to play in the inaugural 2014 play-in match remain unknown, Santiago said at the MPSF meeting that if the play-in match started this year it would have featured the EIVA and Conference Carolinas champions.

Santiago, who is also an associate athletics director at BYU, also said the committee has not ruled out using the RPI from the current year instead of the previous year to decide the two play-in teams. However, the committee chairman said at the meeting that using the current year RPI would be difficult because conferences need advanced time to rearrange their conference tournaments to accommodate the play-in match.

The three-person NCAA committee is expected to formally announce the addition play-in match and the conferences that have to play in the match following its annual meeting in June.

The conference head coaches at its recent league meeting voted 12-1 in favor of keeping its 24-match MPSF schedule through the 2016 season.

The MPSF last season increased its league schedule by two matches to 24 matches after adding Cal Baptist as the 13th member of the conference. This schedule change at the 2012 league meetings resulted in some concern among certain coaches because it decreased the amount of possible non-conference matches.

Men’s volleyball teams can schedule up to 28 matches per regular season. The NCAA also allows teams to schedule an additional regular season match per road match it plays against Hawai’i.

The new conference schedule implemented for the 2013 season resulted in a decrease of MPSF non-conference matches against non-West Coast schools by 32.6 percent compared to 2012.

Schools in the MPSF have won all but four national championships since men’s volleyball became an NCAA sanctioned sport in 1970. In addition, the MPSF went a combined 20-6 against non-West Coast schools during the 2013 regular season season.

One of the biggest reasons coaches voted to keep its current conference schedule is because a decreased 22-match schedule would be unbalanced with teams not playing each other an equal amount of times during the regular season, according to the league meeting minutes that were released Monday. The coaches also opted by 12-1 vote to spend $5,000 from the league’s reserve funds to look into developing a 24-match conference schedule through the 2018 season.

Coaches, though, did propose moving back to a 22-match conference schedule, according to the meeting’s minutes, if the MPSF expanded to include a 14th team.

In addition, the coaches expressed interest in bringing back the MPSF’s two-division format if conference expanded to 14 or more teams.

Seven of the 13 MPSF schools — including NCAA Tournament participants UC Irvine and BYU — had higher attendance averages for men’s volleyball. In addition, five of the eight teams from the EIVA had higher men’s volleyball attendance averages.

Women’s volleyball home attendance averages excelled in the Conference Carolinas with six of the nine teams having better attendance than their school’s men’s volleyball team.

The eight-team MIVA was the only conference with a 50 percent split of men’s and women’s volleyball programs having higher attendance.

This is the second consecutive year that 19 men’s volleyball team had a higher home attendance averages than their women’s volleyball counterparts. While men’s volleyball rivaled women’s volleyball for head-to-head home attendance average, women’s volleyball had a higher overall home attendance average among Division I-II colleges with both teams.

The attendance average differences at most schools between men’s and women’s volleyball teams was within 100 people. For the second consecutive year, though, there were four schools that had more than 1,000 attendance average gap between there two volleyball programs.

Hawai’i men’s volleyball had the nation’s second highest attendance average at 2,735, but that number was almost 3,500 people less than the Hawai’i women’s volleyball team’s home attendance average. In addition, Penn State women’s volleyball drew about 2,400 more people per home match than the Nittany Lions men’s volleyball team, while the Stanford women’s volleyball had about a 1,100 home attendance average increase compared to its men’s counterparts.

BYU was the only school where men’s volleyball program to out-drew women’s volleyball by more than 1,000 people per home match.

UC Irvine after getting the at-large bid to the four-team NCAA Tournament swept both the No. 3 seed Loyola in the semifinals and the No. 1 seed BYU in the championship match to win back-to-back national titles. The Anteaters opened the season at No. 1 preseason coaches poll and held the top spot for four weeks during the regular season as it finished in second place in the MPSF.

Ball State coach Joel Walton was the only voter to not put UC Irvine at No. 1 on his season’s final coaches poll ballot. Walton, the 2013 MIVA Coach of the Year, had the NCAA champion runner-ups BYU at No. 1 on his ballot.

BYU ended the regular season at No. 1 in the national coaches poll and dropped one spot in the final coaches poll to No. 2 — 14 points behind the top-ranked Anteaters.

This is the second time in the last three years that NCAA champion was not the unanimous No. 1 in the season’s final national coaches poll. Ohio State after winning the 2011 national title received 14 of 16 first-place in the final coaches poll.
