There is no easing into the season for Charleston.

Charleston as part of recently unveiling its 2022 schedule announced it will open the season with a road non-conference match against Ohio State.

The Buckeyes were ranked in the national coaches poll throughout the 2021 season and finished in fifth place in the MIVA. Among the multiple Ohio State starters returning includes Freshman All-American outside attacker Sotiris Siapanis who was in the nation’s top 10 with a 4.12 kills per game average.

Charleston ended last season in fifth place in the EIVA and reached the EIVA Tournament for the first time in its program history. Setter Diego Villafane also returns for his senior season after earning First-Team All-EIVA honors — the first Charleston player to receive this accolade.

The Golden Eagles will enter the season with a new head coach. Former head coach Mike Iandolo departed the university during the offseason to become an assistant coach with Ball State.

This will be the third all-time meeting between the Buckeyes and Golden Eagles. Ohio State swept Charleston in both previous matches, including in the teams’ 2019 season opener in Columbus, Ohio.

Charleston will have two non-conference matches against MIVA teams in 2022.

Along with its season-opener against Ohio State, Charleston will have a home match versus Purdue Fort Wayne in March.
