What to know: Nothing can be taken for granted at the Olympics — even if an opponent is on a lengthy losing streak. The United States following its first loss of the tournament will continue pool play as it faces winless Tunisia. Tunisia is 0-31 all-time at the Olympics preliminary round dating back to its first appearance in 1972 and has lost 16 consecutive sets, including losing every set so far in this preliminary round. U.S. setter Micah Christenson leads the tournament through the first two preliminary round matches with 90 sets and guided the offense to more than a .500 attack percentage in a tournament opening sweep against France. The United States, though, was held to a .202 attack percentage as it lost to Russia in four games on Monday. Former Penn State All-American opposite Matt Anderson in the loss had 14 kills and is among the tournament leaders with a combined 27 kills so far in the preliminary round. Along with the U.S. offense, libero Erik Shoji is in the tournament’s top 10 with both 15 digs and 30 successful service receptions. Opposite Wassim Ben Tara leads Tunisia with 16 combined kills in the first two matches, including having a team-high 11 kills in a tournament-opening loss to Brazil. Tunisia in that loss out-blocked the defending gold medalists Brazil 8 to 5. The United States has never dropped a set to Tunisia in three previous Olympic meetings. If the United States beats Tunisia, it has a chance to move into second place in Pool B with two remaining pool-play matches. First-place Russia and second-place Brazil will also play each other on Wednesday.
