What to know: The near unanimous top-ranked team in college men’s volleyball is finally back in action. No. 1/1 BYU will play its first match in almost 11 months as it opens its 2021 season with a two-match home series against No. 8/8 UCLA. BYU in the final days before the 2020 season was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic split a road series against Hawai’i and surpassed the Rainbow Warriors for No. 1 in both national coaches poll and national media poll. Three Preseason First-Team All-Americans return to the Cougars’ starting lineup, including opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez. Fernandez ended last season with a nation-best 0.92 aces per game average and was in the nation’s top 15 with a 4.00 kills per game average as he earned the National Player of the Year. Setter Wil Stanley, the 2020 Lloy Ball Award winner, also returns as a graduate student after guiding BYU to the nation’s second-best attack percentage last season at .358. UCLA opened its season with a home sweep against No. 10 Grand Canyon last week. Setter Sam Korbine guided the Bruins to a .341 attack percentage in the victory, while 2020 Freshman All-American outside attacker Cole Ketrzynski had a match-high 13 kills. UCLA is on a three-match losing streak to BYU, and the Bruins have not defeated the Cougars since winning their match-up in the 2018 NCAA Tournament semifinals.
