What to know: With only nine miles separating the two schools, this is second shortest distance between NCAA Division I/II men’s volleyball programs (only UC Irvine and Concordia-Irvine are closer). The primary conference for both schools is the East Coast Conference, so hopefully this will become a budding rivalry for years to come.

D’Youville announced a last February that they would start the process of transitioning from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division II. As a member of NCAA Division III men’s volleyball, it had a 315-299 all-time record and reached the Molten Division III Championship national tournament in three consecutive years from 1999 to 2001.

The institution from Buffalo, New York also went through a rebranding last summer as they were formerly known as the Spartans. The administration felt that the nickname was not inclusive of represented the identities of all students represented so they are now the Saints.

D’Youville struggled last year to a 2-16 record, but return all of their starters except their setter, Karl Jauch. Over 94% of offensive production (kills) returns this season, while over 80% of their defense returns (blocks and digs). Middle attacker Ali Khadra led the 2020 team in blocks per game and attack percentage.

Daemen finished the 2020 season with a 12-7 record after finishing their inaugural season at 6-17. The Wildcats were picked second in the preseason Independent poll.

The Wildcats were hoping to have services of graduate transfer opposite Zach Yerington for another season, but he decided to forgo his eligibility to pursue professional opportunities. Filling that void looks to be Robert Patzer, an opposite who transferred to Daemen after competing for three seasons at Wells College, a NCAA Division III program. Patzer averaged 3.33 kills per game in 2020 en route to earning Co-Player of the Year honors in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Daemen will look to outside attacker Zach Schneider, a 2020 All-Independent team honoree, to lead the team in 2021. He led the 2020 team in kills, aces, and digs. Setter Michael Kreuger also returns to the squad this year.

While the Wildcats were second in the nation last year with a .186 opponent attack percentage, they will have to do without middle attacker Jahari Winkfield who led the 2020 team in blocks per game.

New to the Daemen coaching staff is graduate assistant Eli Irizarry Pares, who won two national championship at Division III Springfield in addition to being named second-team All-American in 2017.
