What to know: Two of the top pin-hitters on the East Coast will go up against each other in the opening week of the season. Outside attacker Michael Fisher and Saint Francis will travel to a non-conference match against outside attacker Tristan Santoyo and Queens. Fisher, a three-time All-EIVA selection, finished last season in the nation’s top 10 with a 4.02 kills per game average. The graduate student had double-digit kills in all but two matches in 2020, including a season-high 29 kills in a season-opening upset against Stanford. Santoyo earned All-Independent Team honors last season after being in the nation’s top 20 with a 3.67 kills per game average. He also opened the 2020 season having at least 15 kills in four of the first seven matches. Along with his offensive success last season, Santoyo had 12 kills on a .321 attack percentage in a four-game loss to Saint Francis in 2019. Fisher in that match, though, led all players with 24 kills while hitting .475. Queens enters this season returning its entire starting lineup and finished the Independent Teams Preseason Poll in third place. Saint Francis also returns a majority of its starting lineup and in the EIVA Preseason Poll was projected to finish the conference in fourth place. This will be the second of two matches for the Red Flash on Friday. Saint Francis will open its season earlier in the afternoon against Limestone.
