What to know: North Greenville coach Fred Battenfield was one of the biggest advocates for outside attacker Jackson Gilbert last season — pointing out in media interviews that he was one of the most underrated pin-hitters in the nation. Gilbert will have the national spotlight as North Greenville plays host to Tusculum in the lone college men’s volleyball match Thursday. Despite missing part of last season because of an injury, Gilbert finished among the ConfCarolinas leaders with a 3.72 kills per game average. He also had a match-high 18 kills on a .341 attack percentage in North Greenville’s upset victory against then-No. 10 Grand Canyon in 2020. Gilbert is returning as a graduate student after the NCAA awarded all men’s volleyball players an additional year of eligibility after the 2020 season was canceled. North Greenville was in fifth place in the ConfCarolinas at the time the season was canceled. Tusculum competing as an independent last year finished its inaugural season at 5-14 and had a four-game loss to North Greenville in January. The Pioneers return multiple starters, including opposite Shaun Kampshoff who was among the team leaders in 2020 averaging both 2.78 kills per game and 1.13 digs per game.
