What to know: The home stand doesn’t get any easier for the undefeated Cougars. No. 2/1 BYU following a two-match series sweep against No. 3/3 UC Santa Barbara during the weekend will now open conference play against its rival No. 7/7 UCLA. Setter Wil Stanley is second in the nation with a 10.85 assists per game average and has guided the Cougars offense to the nation’s third-best attack percentage at .343. In addition, Stanley had a combined 19 digs in the series against UC Santa Barbara to earn MPSF Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week. Along with Stanley, opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez has a nation-best 0.95 aces per game average and is fifth in the country with a 4.14 kills per game average. However, UCLA held Fernandez to less than both 15 kills and a .175 attack percentage in the two meetings last season. UCLA bounced back from an upset loss to No. 12 Princeton last week and defeated No. 5/6 Long Beach State on Saturday. The Bruins have lost three of their last five matches without Daenen Gymiah, the 2019 Ryan Millar Award winner as the nation’s top middle attacker, in the starting lineup because of an injury. Freshman outside attacker Cole Ketrzynski leads UCLA and is among the national leaders with a 3.13 kills per game average, including having a season-high 17 kills against Long Beach State. UCLA leads the nation with a 2.31 aces per game average, along with having at least 19 service errors in all but one match this season. The Bruins committed 31 service errors in a road loss to the Cougars last season to continue their streak of having not won a road match at Smith Fieldhouse since 2005.
