What to know: No. 3/3 UC Santa Barbara will have to find a way in the rematch to slow down opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez — or at the very least have him commit one error. Fernandez had a match-high 18 kills and zero attack errors on a .529 attack percentage as No. 2/2 BYU defeated UC Santa Barbara 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 25-18 in the opener of their two-match non-conference series on Friday in Provo, Utah. This was the fifth time during the Cougars’ nine-match winning streak to open the season that Fernandez had at least 15 kills. The Preseason All-American entered this weekend sixth in the nation with a 4.39 kills per game average. Along with his offensive performance, Fernandez had a match-high three aces to extend his streak of five consecutive matches with multiple aces. The Cougars out-hit the Gauchos .402 to .272 and became the second team this season to limit the UC Santa Barbara offense to less than a .350 attack percentage. Middle attacker Keenan Sanders in the loss finished with 10 kills and zero attack errors while hitting .714. All three of the Gauchos starting pin-hitters, though, had less than a .225 attack percentage.
