What to know: No. 5/5 UC Irvine will have the task of trying to slow down one of the top offensive teams in the nation as it opens a two-match home non-conference series against No. 2/2 BYU. The Cougars enter the final leg of their two-week road trip third nation with a .377 attack percentage. Preseason All-American outside attacker Davide Gardini leads the MPSF and is second in the country with both a 4.70 kills per game average and a .521 attack percentage. The sophomore has double-digit kills in every match so far this season and has two or fewer attack errors in each of the last four matches. He also had a combined 30 kills in the team’s two-match road series sweep against Mount Olive last week. Along with Gardini, Preseason All-American opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez is seventh in the country averaging 4.10 kills per game. Fernandez last season had a combined 42 kills in a two-match series versus UC Irvine, including 23 kills while hitting .415 in the series-opening victory. UC Irvine Preseason All-American outside attacker Joel Schneidmiller finished with 14 kills on a .455 attack percentage last year to help the Anteaters rebound the following day to split that series. Schneidmiller through the first three weeks of this season is in the nation’s top 30 with both a .352 attack percentage and a 3.38 kills per game average. UC Irvine enters this match following a four-game victory against No. 8/8 Stanford on Friday. Preseason All-American middle attacker Scott Stadick in the home win finished with a season-high eight blocks and had seven kills on a .545 attack percentage.
