What to know: For all of No. 3 BYU’s success in recent years, it has not resulted in victories at Loyola. The Cougars will attempt to snap a three-match road losing streak against the No. 11 Ramblers as the two teams meet at Alumni Gym. Among the starters returning for the Cougars include two Preseason All-American selections — opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez and outside attacker Davide Gardini. Fernandez finished last season fourth in the nation with a 4.29 kills per game average and had at least 20 kills in seven matches. Gardini as a freshman last season was in the nation’s top 25 averaging 3.47 kills per game, including a team-high 23 kills and five aces in a five-game victory against Stanford in the MPSF Tournament quarterfinals. Loyola enters this match against BYU following a four-game victory versus King on Thursday to open its 2020 season. Redshirt freshman outside attacker Cole Schlothauer in his college debut finished with a match-high 17 kills on a .441 attack percentage and added two aces. In addition, outside attacker Devin Joslyn contributed 12 kills and led all players with four aces. Setter Ian Cowen started in place of Preseason All-American setter Garrett Zolg and guided the offense to a .293 attack percentage in the victory.
