What to know: It’s still not officially 2020 but that isn’t preventing the first marquee non-conference match of the 2020 season from occurring. No. 8 UC Irvine will play host to No. 10 Princeton to open the college men’s volleyball regular season. The defending EIVA champions Princeton enters the regular season with its highest preseason national ranking in program history. George Huhmann playing in a hybrid opposite and middle attacker position ended the 2019 season among the national leaders with a 3.41 kills per game average while hitting .344 and had a career-best 99 blocks. The 2019 EIVA Player of the Year also spent the offseason playing with the U.S. Men’s National Team and helped the team win the silver medal at the FIVB Volleyball Nations League. Huhmann, a Preseason All-American, is one of the four starters returning from last year’s team that led Princeton to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 21 years. UC Irvine ended last season narrowly missing the final at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. In addition, outside attacker Joel Schneidmiller and middle attacker Scott Stadick were named Preseason All-American selections. Schneidmiller was in the nation’s top 15 with a 3.65 kills per game average last season, including having a match-high 12 kills on a .647 attack percentage in an early-season sweep against Princeton. Stadick had a match-high six blocks in that victory and concluded the 2019 season fifth in the nation averaging 1.21 blocks per game. This will be the fourth all-time meeting between UC Irvine and Princeton with the Anteaters winning the last three matches dating back to 1998.
