What to know: All that stands in the way from the United States reaching the quarterfinals for the second time in the nation’s history is one of the top South American teams. The United States after finishing second place in Pool D will face Argentina in the Round of 16. UCLA outside attacker Alex Knight led the United States and was among the tournament leaders in the pool-play stage with 35 combined kills on a 48.61 percent offensive efficiency. Knight had a double-digit kills in two matches, including a match-high 14 kills in a sweep against Nigeria on Friday to help the United States secure a berth to the Round of 16. Outside attacker Manuel Armoa leads Argentina with 44 combined kills on a 45.83 percent offensive efficiency. Armoa in the pool-play finale had a match-high 22 kills to help Argentina beat Japan in four games and finish Pool C in third place. In addition, Armoa was a part of the Argentina team last year that had a top-three finish at the South American Championships to earn a World Championship berth. This Round of 16 match also will feature two of the top liberos at the tournament. Long Beach State libero Mason Briggs leads the United States and is fourth at the World Championship with a 1.85 digs per game average. Argentina libero Tobias Scarpa is 10th in the tournament averaging 1.56 digs per game. The winner of this match will advance to play the winner of Bulgaria versus Brazil in the quarterfinals.
