A setter who guided the NJIT offense to more than a .350 attack percentage in back-to-back conference victories is winning a national award for the first in his college career.

Off the Block announced Monday that Roque Nido was selected as the Off the Block National Freshman of the Week.

Nido had 30 assists as he led NJIT to hit a conference season-best .426 in an upset sweep against Harvard on Saturday. He also contributed two aces along with 38 assists to help NJIT finish with a .370 attack percentage and sweep Sacred Heart on Friday.

This is the second time that a Highlander has been named the National Freshman of the Week since the award started in 2014. Outside attacker Alvar Gimeo last season was the first NJIT player to earn the accolade.

The National Freshman of the Week is presented each week during the regular season to the NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball freshman who had the most outstanding performance. The winner is selected by the Off the Block staff and is announced every Monday during the regular season on the Off the Block website, offtheblockblog.com.

Along with the National Freshman of the Week, Off the Block will present the Freshmen All-American Team at the end of the regular season.

Off the Block is a national award winning website that launched in 2011 and is the nation’s leader in college men’s volleyball coverage.
