No. 2/2 Long Beach State (19-1, 4-0 Big West) vs No. 7/8 UC Irvine (14-7, 2-2 Big West) Match vitals: 7 p.m. in Irvine, California Follow live:Live stats, In-Match tweets, Live Video What to know: Although No. 2/2 Long Beach State’s match-up against No. 7/8 UC Irvine this weekend is billed at the latest installment of the Black and Blue Rivalry series between the two schools, that moniker is misleading. Under their current senior class headed by TJ DeFalco, Kyle Ensing and Josh Tuaniga, the 49ers have gone a perfect 7-0 against the Anteaters since 2016, with three of those wins coming in straights sets. UC Irvine has not defeated Long Beach since a four-set win at home on April 3, 2015. Long Beach State is currently looking to rebound after having its 23-wins streak snapped in an upset to then-No. 11 USC last weekend. The ‘Eaters, on the other hand, have struggled heavily as of late after dropping five of their last six games, four of which were sweeps. Long Beach State is currently hitting a highly efficient .429 on the year, second best in the nation. Ensing leads the team with a 3.52 kills per set average followed by Defalco’s 3.33. Joel Schneidmiller, who was sidelined the last two matches, leads the Anteaters averaging 3.64 kills per set, the third best in the Big West. Seniors Karl Apfelbach and Aaron Koubi are averaging 2.76 and 2.53 kills per set.
