The people have spoken to once again give Pepperdine outside attacker David Wieczorek a national award.
Wieczorek received just shy of 3,000 votes to win the Off the Block National Player of the Month for January.
The Off the Block National Player of the Month recognizes the best individual performances from NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball players during the month and gives fans from around the world the chance to determine who was the best player through online voting. It is also the only college men’s volleyball national monthly award.
Wieczorek ended the month in the nation’s top 15 with a 3.83 kills per game average and hit .332. The three-time Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Fan Choice National Player of the Year also had two matches with at least 20 kills, including a season-high 22 kills in a loss to UC Irvine on Jan. 27.
In the championship round of the National Player of the Month, Wieczorek received 1,598 votes and had 57.7 percent of the vote in the six-player field. This championship round performance followed Wieczorek earning more than 1,250 votes to win the Outside Attacker Division and advance to the finals.
Stanford setter Paul Bischoff finished as the runner-up for the National Player of the Month and was the only other player in the championship round to garner more than 10 percent of the vote.
The first round placed candidate on one of five ballots based on their position. Each winner and the runner-up from all the ballots who received the most votes qualified for the championship round.
More than 14,000 votes were cast during this National Player of the Month event.
The National Player of the Month is one of two awards solely determined by the fans. Similar to the monthly award, the Off the Block Fan Choice National Player of the Year is an annual event at the end of the season with fans deciding the winner of this 64-player bracket-style tournament through online voting.
As a National Player of the Month, Wieczorek will receive an automatic berth to the Fan Choice National Player of the Year Tournament.
Off the Block was founded in 2011 and is the nation’s leaders in college men’s volleyball coverage.
