What to know: Tonight’s matchup features two teams that finished in the VolleyFour last season. No. 7/7 Ohio State is currently 2-0 after taking out Charleston and Penn State at home last week. While Ohio State will be without the services of All-American Nicolas Szerszen, redshirt sophomore opposite Jake Hanes has provided the majority of the Buckeye’s offensive firepower. Hanes leads the team with 37 kills while hitting at a deadly .469 hitting percentage. Junior outside attacker Reese Devilbiss and redshirt senior middle attacker Blake Leeson have both been efficient on the offensive front as well, with hitting percentages of .432 and .600 respectively. Collectively, Ohio State is outhitting their opponents .408 to .202 and outserving them (20 aces to 6). It remains to be seen if the Buckeyes can maintain that efficiency against their first ranked opponent of the season, the No. 5/5 Cougars. BYU has yet to play this season, but will look to replace the output of All-Americans Brendan Sander, Leo Durkin and Price Jarmin. The Cougars will be led by Gabi Garcia Fernandez, who earned All America Second Team and Newcomer of the Year accolades last season. Fernandez led the team in kills per set (3.44), aces per set (0.48) and digs per set (1.32).
