UC Irvine surges to No. 3 in new strength of schedule rankings

Playing undefeated Long Beach State does wonders for a team’s strength of schedule.

UC Irvine following its two weekend losses to Long Beach State jumped eight spots to No. 3 in the new strength of schedule rankings that the NCAA released earlier this week.Strength of schedule is one of the criteria categories the selection committee uses to determine the NCAA Tournament field. Strength of schedule, winning percentage and opponent strength of schedule also are components for the mathematical formula used to determines a team’s RPI ranking.

Along with UC Irvine climbing in the rankings, Lewis moved up a to No. 1 in the rankings. Lewis suffered losses last week to Ohio State and McKendree, but those two teams have a combined 30-16 that helped improve the Flyers’ strength of schedule

The previous No. 1 team UCLA dropped three spots to No. 4. In addition, USC at No. 2 and UC Santa Barbara at No. 5 round-out the top five in the strength of schedule rankings.

The strength of schedule rankings will continue to be updated throughout the regular season and postseason until Selection Sunday on April 22.
