Top college men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

No. 3/3 UCLA (15-4, 4-1 MPSF) vs. No. 5/5 BYU (13-4, 6-0 MPSF)

What to know: There is still more than month left in the regular season, but No. 5/5 BYU with a victory tonight can put stranglehold on first place in the MPSF. BYU already with a 1.5-match lead against No. 3/3 UCLA in the MPSF standings will now play host to the second-place Bruins. The Cougars enter on a conference-best eight-match winning streak and are the only undefeated team in MPSF play. In addition, BYU in each of its last two matches has rallied from a two-game deficit to beat Stanford and No. 8/7 Pepperdine in five games. All-American outside attacker Brenden Sander had a 17 kills on a .467 attack percentage in the comeback victory against the Waves on Thursday. Sander one of two Cougars in the nation’s top 25 for kills per game average. Freshman opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez leads BYU with a 3.53 kills per game average and has double-digit ills on but three matches this season. UCLA after opening the season winning 14 of its first 15 matches went on three-match losing streak that was snapped with a victory against Stanford on Thursday. Opposite Christian Hessenauer in that conference win returned to the court following a two-match absence and finished with a match-high 16 kills while hitting .387. Hessenauer is fifth in the MPSF and among the national leaders with a 3.44 kills per game average. Despite its recent losing streak, UCLA in the nation’s top five with a .342 attack percentage. All-American setter Micah Ma’a is third in the nation averaging 10.72 assists per game and has guided the Bruins to at least a .400 attack percentage in four of their first six MPSF matches. BYU is on a seven-match winning streak against UCLA dating back to 2014. In addition, the Bruins have not won at Smith Fieldhouse since 2009.

What to know: Princeton is pulling out all the nostalgia as it attempts to upset No. 10/10 Penn State. The Tigers during the conference match will honor their 1998 team that beat the Nittany Lions in the EIVA Tournament and will unveil the team’s NCAA Tournament banner. Twenty years later that 1998 Princeton team remains the only squad in program history to win the EIVA championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament. Despite this year’s team opening the EIVA season with four consecutive losses, Princeton has won back-to-back matches. Middle attacker George Huhmann led Princeton with both 14 kills and eight blocks in a four-game victory against St. Francis on Friday to help Princeton move into fifth place in the conference standings. Princeton is now within two matches of fourth-place Charleston for the final berth to the four-team EIVA Tournament. In addition, Huhmann is fourth in the EIVA with a 3.08 kills per game average and has finished three conference matches with both double-digit kills and at least a .350 attack percentage. Penn State has won its last two matches following a home loss against George Mason and is in second place in the EIVA. Penn State middle attacker Kevin Gear also entered the weekend fifth in the nation with a .445 attack percentage. Gear has at least a .400 attack percentage in eight consecutive matches, including having eight kills while hitting .500 in a sweep against NJIT on Friday.
