Lewis becomes unanimous No. 1 in OTB, Springbak Division II Coaches Poll

The only change to the the latest Off the Block/Springbak Division II National Coaches Poll that was released Tuesday morning is Lewis back at being the unanimous top team in the poll.

Lewis regained the status as the unanimous No. 1 team in the poll despite going 1-2 in the 2018 Outrigger Invitational. Lewis defeated Penn State on Saturday after losing to BYU and Hawai’i on the previous two nights. Sophomore outside attacker Ryan Coenen led the Flyers at the non-conference tournament with 39 kills, 17 digs, and 7 aces over the three nights.

Lewis returns to action Saturday as it attempts to avenge its Feb. 28 loss to MIVA rival Loyola.

Concordia-Irvine stayed at No. 2 after hosting four matches in a six-night span last week. The Eagles went 2-2 in non-conference action as it defeated Loyola and Harvard, but lost to Fort Wayne and Ball State. Raymond Barsemian led the Eagles with 58 kills and Jacob Weiser’s 48 digs during this four match home stand.

Concordia-Irvine this week returns to MPSF conference action as it travels to UCLA and Pepperdine.

McKendree remains No. 3 in the coaches poll following a four-game win against St. Francis on Saturday. Senior outside attacker Nolan Reuter led the Bearcats with 19 kills and 11 digs. The 19 kills was his second-best performance on the season, while the 11 digs tied his personal-best for the season.

McKendree returns to MIVA conference play this week as it hosts Lindenwood and travel to Quincy.

UC San Diego maintains its No. 4 ranking as it defeated USC on Wednesday but lost to Stanford on Friday. Outside attacker Wyatt Harrison was named the Big West Freshman of the Week for his performances in those two matches. Harrison had 22 kills in the two matches, while hitting at a .474 clip.

This week UC San Diego plays a home-and-home series with UC Irvine.

Barton rounds out the top-five poll for the third consecutive week, despite having a bye week. The Bulldogs have won 12 of their last 13, including their last seven matches. Barton is a perfect 9-0 in ConfCarolinas play and leads the conference in hitting percentage and kills per game average.

Both NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II men’s volleyball programs compete for the same national championship. The AVCA National Coaches Poll ranks the top 15 Division I-II men’s volleyball teams and is released each Monday during the regular season.

A national voting committee comprised of coaches from the more than 20 Division II teams determines the weekly rankings for the Division II National Coaches Poll.
