10 current college players make U.S. roster for Pan American Cup

The United States will be relying heavily on current college men’s volleyball players as it attempts to win a gold medal at the Pan American Cup.

USA Volleyball announced Monday its 14-player roster that features 10 college players for the international tournament.

BYU is the only program to have multiple current players on the U.S. roster. All-American outside attacker Brenden Sander, all-conference middle attacker Price Jarman and former All-American outside attacker Jake Langlois join the United States after helping the Cougars reach the NCAA Tournament finals in May.

CSUN, Hawai’i, Loyola, Long Beach State, Pepperdine, Stanford UC Irvine and UCLA each have one player represented on the team.

Among the current college players includes four All-American selections from the most recent school year — UCLA outside attacker Jake Arnitz, Long Beach State opposite Kyle Ensing, Loyola middle attacker Jeff Jendryk and Hawai’i libero Larry Tuileta. In addition, Jendryk spent this off-season playing with the U.S. Men’s National Team and helped the United States finish in fourth place in the FIVB World League.

The United States under U.S. Men’s National Team assistant coach Rob Neilson will begin the Pan American Cup with a pool-play match against Mexico on Tuesday in Gatineau, Canada. The team also will have pool-play matches against the Dominican Republic on Wednesday and Cuba on Thursday.

The top team in both of the tournament’s four-team pools following the three-match pool-play round will advance to the semifinals. The second and third place teams will qualify for the quarterfinals on Friday.

The United States leads all nations with five Pan American Cup gold medals but has not won the event since 2012.
