What to know: The most critical and anticipated matches of this college men’s volleyball regular season so far have arrived. No. 3/3 BYU will play host to No. 1/2 Long Beach State in a two-match series with first place in the MPSF on the line. Both the Cougars and 49ers are tied for a nation-best 14-match winning streak. In addition, Long Beach State with three remaining conference matches is a half-match ahead of second-place BYU in the MPSF standings and can clinch its first MPSF regular season title in almost a decade if it sweeps the series. BYU can clinch its fourth conference regular season title in the last five years with a series sweep. The MPSF regular season champion will have home court advantage throughout eight-team MPSF Tournament. The Cougars historically have a significant advantage playing at Smith Fieldhouse, especially in the postseason. BYU is 23-2 all-time in MPSF Tournament home matches with its last loss occurring in 2011. In addition, the Cougars are 12-1 at home so far this season — only slightly worse than Long Beach State’s 11-0 home record. This conference series will feature two of the top offenses in the nation. Long Beach State leads the nation with a .380 attack percentage, including hitting more than .400 in 10 of its last 12 MPSF matches. All-American setter Josh Tuaniga also leads the nation with a 11.36 assists per game average, while All-American outside attacker TJ DeFalco is sixth in the nation averaging 4.04 kills per game. BYU is among the nation’s leaders with a .321 attack percentage and has hit more than .300 in its last six matches. The Cougars also have been without All-American opposite Ben Patch, who has missed 11 consecutive matches with an injury. Patch, though, did participate in on-court warm-ups before the team’s four-game non-conference victory against Princeton on Tuesday. Despite Patch being out of the lineup, setter Leo Durkin is second in the nation with a 10.74 assists per game average. In addition, outside attacker Jake Langlois is in the nation’s top 10 with both a 3.95 kills per game average and a 0.57 aces per game average.
