What to know: UC Irvine learned just how much All-MIVA opposite Brendan Surane can influence a match. No. 6/6 UC Irvine and No. 12/10 Ball State will meet in a non-conference rematch after Surane had a career-high 22 kills in a five-game victory against the Anteaters last year. Surane in his senior season is among the MIVA leaders with a 3.11 kills per game average, including double-digit kills in 11 matches. He also is one of two Cardinals in the conference’s top 10 for kills. Freshman outside attacker Matt Szews is third in the MIVA with a 3.68 kills per game average and is coming off a season-high 23 kill performance in a five-game loss to Grand Canyon last week. That home loss ended Ball State’s three-match losing streak and was its first loss this season to an unranked team. UC Irvine has won five of its last six matches with four of those matches going to a decisive fifth game. All-American outside attacker Tamir Hershko has at least 15 kills four times during this stretch of matches. Hershko, who did not play in the match last season against Ball State because of an injury, has a 3.03 kills per game average and a .302 attack percentage. This match will also feature two of the top middle attackers in the nation. Ball State middle attacker Matt Walsh is leading the nation with both a 1.31 blocks per game average and 88 total blocks. The all-conference junior also had a combined 20 blocks in the two-match series versus Grand Canyon. In addition, Ball State is second in the nation with a 2.65 blocks per game average. UC Irvine freshman Scott Stadick is seventh in the nation averaging 1.12 blocks per game. Stadick also had a match-high six blocks and added six kills on a .545 attack percentage as UC Irvine swept St. Francis on Tuesday.
