What to know: Coach Mark Pavlik for years would have his team travel across the country during Spring Break to play nationally ranked MPSF opponents. The Nittany Lions, though, for the second consecutive year will have an opportunity to play on their home court against a top-10 nationally ranked West Coast school. No. 15 Penn State will play host to No. 8/9 Stanford to close out the Penn State Tournament. The Nittany Lions are winless in their three previous home matches against top-10 ranked MPSF teams since the team in 2006 defeated then-No. 3 Long Beach State in the regular season and the No. 1 seed UC Irvine in the NCAA Tournament semifinals at Rec Hall. Penn State enters this non-conference match on a three-match winning streak, including a four-game victory against No. 13 UC Santa Barbara on Friday. Opposite Calvin Mende had a match-high 15 kills on a .323 attack percentage against the Gauchos, while outside attacker Aiden Albrecht added 13 kills and led all players with 10 blocks. Albrecht since replacing injured All-American outside attacker Chris Nugent in the starting lineup has double-digit kills in four of the last five matches. He also had more than .325 attack percentage in three of those matches. Stanford ended a two-match losing streak as it defeated Lees-McRae in four games to open the non-conference tournament on Friday. Stanford outside attacker Jordan Ewert is in the nation’s top 20 with a 3.60 kills per game average. Ewert also was voted earlier this week the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. National Player of the Month after having double-digit kills five times and more than 20 kills in two matches during February. Along with Ewert, middle attacker Kevin Rakestraw is among the national leaders with both a .421 attack percentage and a 1.02 blocks per game average. This match will be the second time Penn State and Stanford have played each other since the Cardinal swept the Nittany Lions in the 2010 NCAA Tournament finals.
