What to know: All-American opposite Ben Patch has been almost unstoppable in his career against No. 8/8 Stanford. The biggest question, though, is whether Patch will be able to play as No. 3/3 BYU opens a two-match series versus Stanford. The Desert News reported on Tuesday that Patch’s status was unknown for the upcoming road matches but coach Shawn Olmstead was hopefully his All-American would be back in the starting lineup. The 2016 Bryan Ivie Award recipient has missed the Cougars’ last three matches during their six-match winning streak because of an injury. Despite the injury, Patch remains second in the nation with a 4.83 kills per game average. He also has at least 20 kills and a .300 attack percentage in three of his four career matches versus Stanford. BYU enters this series in second place in the MPSF and two-matches behind No. 2/2 Long Beach State for first place. Stanford halfway through its conference schedule is in fourth place and already has one home victory against top-five nationally ranked team this season. Outside attacker Jordan Ewert leads the Cardinal and is in the nation’s top 15 with a 3.79 kills per game average. Ewert has a double-digit kills in the last four matches, including a match-high 22 kills while hitting .439 in an upset victory versus then-No. 4 UCLA earlier this month. Along with Ewert, middle attacker Kevin Rakestraw is seventh in the nation with a .436 attack percentage and in the nation’s top 20 with 49 blocks.
