What to know: Not much has changed since No. 4/4 BYU on its home court defeated No. 2/2 UCLA in the MPSF Tournament finals last season. Both teams returned multiple All-American starters, are among the nation’s top offensive teams and once again are legit contenders for the NCAA champions. UCLA will make its first trip back to the Smith Fieldhouse since the 2016 postseason as it opens a two-match weekend series against BYU. The Bruins are in first place and one of two MPSF teams that have yet to lose a conference match. UCLA is second in the nation with a .357 attack percentage, including hitting more than .300 in its last three matches versus nationally ranked teams. All-American outside attacker Jake Arnitz leads UCLA and is in the nation’s top 25 with a 3.35 kills per game average. Along with the offense, All-American setter Micah Ma’a and All-American middle attacker Mitch Stahl are two of the 21 players in the nation who already have double-digit aces this season. Stahl also had a season-high five aces in sweep against No. 11 UC Santa Barbara last week and at least one ace in the last seven matches. BYU continues its four-match home stead after splitting a two-match series against No. 6/6 UC Irvine last week. In addition, the five-game conference loss to the Anteaters snapped the Cougars’ eight-match home winning streak that dated back to last year and included their MPSF Tournament finals victory versus the Bruins. All-American opposite Ben Patch is leading the nation with a 4.75 kills per game average while hitting more than .300 in all but two matches he has played in so far this season. The 2016 Bryan Ivie Award recipient also had a match-high 14 kills in the postseason victory against UCLA last year. Besides Patch, setter Leo Durkin is fourth in the nation averaging 10.94 assists per game and guided the BYU offense to a top-10 attack percentage in the nation at .312.
