What to know: The two programs embroiled in one of college men’s volleyball biggest NCAA Tournament at-large bid controversies for fans will now face each other on the court. No. 9/9 Lewis will play host to No. 5/7 Pepperdine in the first meeting between the two programs since the Flyers narrowly edged out the Waves for the final at-large bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Pepperdine that season had a higher ranking in the national coaches poll, which is not a criteria category the selection committee uses to determine the NCAA Tournament field. The Flyers, though, earned the at-large bid in part because of their stronger strength of schedule and the Waves being hurt in that category by not playing any non-conference matches. Pepperdine since 2014 has increased its non-conference schedule, including this season scheduling its first regular season Midwest road trip in more than a decade. Pepperdine opened the non-conference road trip rallying from a one-game deficit to beat No. 6/8 Loyola in five games on Friday. Outside attacker Michael Wexter had a match-high 22 kills on a .405 attack percentage, while Fort Wayne transfer and outside attacker Alex Harhaller contributed 18 kills. Setter Soren Dion-Kindem replaced starting setter Joshua Stewart in the third game and helped guide the Waves offense to finish with a .310 attack percentage. Dion-Kindem also led Pepperdine with 11 digs against Loyola. Lewis in a five-game victory against Harvard on Friday had four players with double-digit digs, including libero Michael Simmons who had a career-high 17 digs. In addition, freshman outside attacker Ryan Coenen finished with a match-high 23 kills on a .340 attack percentage. With this victory, Lewis is on a two-match winning streak following a season-opening loss to No. 4/4 BYU.

What to know: No. 10/10 Stanford will have a short turnaround as it tries to find a way to slow down or contain the offense of No. 1/1 Ohio State. The two teams will conclude their two-match non-conference series after the Buckeyes finished with a season-high .404 attack percentage in a series-opening sweep on Friday. All-American opposite Miles Johnson led the team with 13 kills while hitting .476 and was one of three Buckeyes with a double-digit kills. Outside attacker Nicolas Szerszen, the 2016 recipient of the AVCA National Player of the Year, also had 12 kills and a match-high four aces. This was the third consecutive match that All-American setter Christy Blough has guided the defending NCAA champions to more than a .300 attack percentage. Despite the loss, the Cardinal out-hit blocked Ohio State 9 to 7 with middle attacker Stephen Moye contributing a match-high six blocks. In addition, outside attacker Jordan Ewert had a match-high 15 kills on a .323 attack percentage against the Buckeyes. The sophomore through the season’s first four matches is leading the Cardinal with a 3.75 kills per game average.
