What to know: No. 11 Stanford less than 24 hours after pulling off a stunning road upset against No. 1/1 BYU will now have to try to repeat the feat. The Cardinal and Cougars will conclude their two-match series after Stanford rallied from a one-game deficit to beat BYU in five games on Friday. This was the fourth time since 2013 that BYU lost a conference home match at Smith Fieldhouse. Outside attacker Madison Hayden in the victory had a match-high 24 kills on a .462 attack percentage. In addition, All-American setter James Shaw finished with three aces along with a season-high 54 assists and guided the Cardinal offense to a match-best .500 attack percentage in the decisive fifth game. Despite the loss, Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Preseason All-American opposite Ben Patch led BYU with 20 kills. It was the second time in the Cougars’ first three matches that Patch ended with at least 20 kills. Along with the offense, the opening match of this weekend series featured a combined 38 service errors. Both BYU and Stanford finished their conference opener with a season-high 19 service errors.

No. 4/3 UC Irvine (1-2, 0-1 MPSF) vs. No. 8/7 UC Santa Barbara (5-1, 1-0 MPSF)

What to know: For UC Santa Barbara to continue one of the nation’s longest winning all it needs to do is pull off a feat it has never accomplished in the rally scoring era and beat UC Irvine on the road. The Gauchos have not defeated the Anteaters at the Bren Center in more than a decade. However, UC Santa Barbara is on the nation’s second longest winning streak at five matches, including a sweep against UC San Diego in Friday. Preseason All-American setter Jonah Seif has also guided the Gauchos offense to at least a .340 attack percentage in the last three matches. UC Irvine suffered its second consecutive loss as it lost conference opener to No. 2/2 UCLA in four games on Friday. All-American outside attacker Tamir Hershko in the loss finished with a match-high 20 kills on a .436 attack percentage. In addition, Hershko has led the Anteaters in kills in the team’s first three matches to open the season.

What to know: Two teams coming off of devastating non-conference losses will now face each other as No. 8/9 Lewis plays host to No. 10/10 Penn State. Lewis enters this match after losing to St. Francis on Friday for the program’s first non-conference loss to an unranked team in three years. In addition, Penn State lost to No. 6/5 Loyola in three games on Thursday to open its two-match Midwest road trip. This match will also feature two of the top middle attackers in the MIVA and EIVA. Lewis middle attacker Bobby Walsh returns for his senior season after being named the 2015 Off the Blcok/Springbak, Inc. National Blocker of the Year. Walsh also had a match-high eight blocks in Lewis’ season-opening victory against then-No. 9 UC Santa Barbara. Penn State middle attacker Matt Callaway in the loss to Loyola finished with nine kills on a .615 attack percentage and added a team-high five blocks.
