UC Irvine opposite La Cavera named MPSF Player of Year

For the first time in almost a decade, an Anteater is the MPSF Player of the Year.

The MPSF announced Thursday that UC Irvine opposite Zack La Cavera was selected by the coaches in the conference as the 2015 MPSF Player of the Year.

La Cavera finished the regular season second in the MPSF and among the nation’s leaders with a 3.72 kills per game average. The senior also had double-digit kills in 23 matches and added more than a .400 attack percentage in 11 of those matches.

Along with being named the MPSF Player of the Year, La Cavera earlier this week was selected as one of three finalists for the inaugural Bryan Ivie Award, which is presented to the nation’s top opposite.

This is the second time an Anteater has been named the MPSF Player of the Year. The first UC Irvine player to win the award was former All-American outside attacker Jayson Jablonsky in 2006.

Among the other top award winners from the MPSF included UCLA ousted attacker J.T. Hatch being named the 2015 MPSF Freshman of Year.

UC Irvine and Pepperdine led all teams with three players earning All-MPSF First-Team honors. In addition, Hawai’i had five players make the all-conference first or second team.
