Top college men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

Multiple teams have an opportunity tonight to pull off monumental upsets.

Concordia-Irvine playing host to No. 14 Stanford highlights the slate of matches tonight as the Eagles attempt to get their first win against a NCAA Division I-II nationally ranked team. In addition, King will try to get the program’s first victory against Conference Carolinas powerhouse Mount Olive.

No. 14 Stanford (3-7, 2-5 MPSF) vs. Concordia-Irvine (5-2)

What to know: Concordia-Irvine in the midst of its transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II will play one of its biggest matches of the season. For the only time this season, Concordia-Irvine will play will host to a nationally ranked MPSF team as it plays No. 14 Stanford in non-conference play. The Eagles, which reached the 2014 NAIA championship, announced last year that they would begin a three-year transition to became a NCAA Division II program. In addition, Concordia-Irvine under former BYU head coach Shawn Patchell is undefeated so far this season against NCAA Division I-II opponents with a four-game win against UC San Diego in its season-opener. Stanford enters this non-conference match having lost five of its last six conference matches, including a four-game road loss to No. 5 Pepperdine on Friday. However, the Cardinal have not lost a non-NCAA Division I-II opponent since 2011.

No. 7 BYU (7-2, 6-1 MPSF) vs. Cal Baptist (3-7, 1-6 MPSF)

What to know: Middle attacker Joseph Grosh will have an opportunity for an encore performance in the series finale against Cal Baptist. Grosh had a team-high 12 kills on zero attack errors and added five blocks as No. 7 BYU defeated Cal Baptist in four games to open their two-match series Friday. In addition, Grosh finished the match with a .800 attack percentage — the fifth-best single-match attack percentage in school history during the rally scoring era. This series opener was also the season debut for senior outside attacker Josue Rivera, who missed the first month of the season with an injury. Rivera had nine kills and helped BYU out-hit Cal Baptist .457 and .170. The Cougars also enter this series finale on a 33-match winning streak at Smith Fieldhouse dating back to 2013. Despite the loss in the opener, Cal Baptist outside attacker Roy Powell had a match-high 15 kills.


Mount Olive (4-3, 4-1 CC) vs. King (4-2, 3-1 CC)

What to know: It shouldn’t surprise anyone if King and Mount Olive play in a decisive fifth game tonight. Three of Tornado’s last four conference matches have reached a game five, including King overcoming a one-game deficit to beat Barton on Friday. With that victory, King is now in fifth place in the Conference Carolinas and remains in position to reach the postseason for the first time in its program’s history. Outside attacker Eddie Moushikhian had a season-high 19 kills in the victory against Barton. The junior is also in the top 10 of the conference with a 3.12 kills per game average. Mount Olive, which reached the Conference Carolinas championship match last season, is in fourth place in the conference and a half-match behind first-place Erskine. In addition, the Trojans enter this road match undefeated all-time against the Tornado. Mount Olive outside attacker Peyton Schirman is also leading all freshmen in the conference with a 3.41 kills per game average.
