Throwback Thursday: A look inside the college men’s volleyball vault

More than 40 seasons of college men’s volleyball has resulted in numerous memorable and interesting moments.

Off the Block on the final Thursday of each month during the college men’s volleyball season in an effort to help preserve the sport’s history will showcase several match highlights and stories from the past.

After scouring the internet for old match footage and stories, Off the Block has its list. Check out this college men’s volleyball Thursday Throwback looking at some of the best and most interesting moments.


2006 NCAA Championship: Penn State vs. UCLA
UCLA after pulling off a series of postseason upsets to reach the NCAA finals swept Penn State to win the 2006 national championship. Check out the video of the match’s final plays that clinched UCLA coach Al Scates’ 19th and final NCAA championship.

1986 NCAA Championship: Pepperdine vs. USC
Pepperdine fought-off multiple potential championship-points to defeat USC in a fifth-game overtime and win back-to-back NCAA championships. Check out the video of the entire decisive fifth game from this national title match.



Unranked Ball State upsets No. 3 Cal State Northridge in 2010
The last time the Cardinals defeated a West Coast team happened almost four years ago when unranked Ball State at home swept No. 3 Cal State Northriddge. Check out the video of the match-winning point to complete one of the Cardinals’ biggest upsets in recent program history.

1998 NCAA semifinals: Princeton vs. Pepperdine
Princeton making its first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history lost in three games to the No. 1 seed Pepperdine in the 1988 NCAA semifinals. Check out the video highlights of Princeton, which earlier that season upset Penn State and won EIVA Tournament championship, from the team’s only NCAA Tournament match.

BYU’s McGown 2013 AVCA Coach of the Year acceptance speech
Second-year BYU coach Chris McGown was named the 2013 AVCA National Coach of the Year as the Cougars won their first MPSF championship in almost 10 years and reached the NCAA finals. Check out McGown’s acceptance speech for this award from the 2013 AVCA Convention in Seattle.

2007 NCAA semifinals: IPFW vs. Pepperdine
In honor of IPFW moving back into the national rankings earlier this week, check out this video footage of IPFW upsetting Pepperdine in the 2007 NCAA semifinals. Seven years later this remains the last postseason victory for the Mastodons.

Quincy shocks Ohio State in 2012
Quincy has two conference wins in the last three seasons but one of those wins came at home against the defending-NCAA champions Ohio State in 2012. Check out the video filmed by a fan of the match-winning point and the students storming the court in celebration.

2010 MPSF Tournament quarterfinals: Hawai’i vs. Pepperdine
Outside attacker Jonas Umlauft, the 2010 MPSF Newcomer of the Year, led Hawai’i to a fifth-game overtime victory against Pepperdine in the MPSF Tournament quarterfinals.
