Outside attacker Nick Goodell had a match-high 15 kills and four aces as Penn State defeated Ohio State 25-14, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22 on Thursday in University Park Pa., to open the Penn State Fall Invitational.
Goodell, a 2011 All-EIVA selection, was one of three Nittany Lions with at least nine kills in the preseason match. All-EIVA outside attacker Aaron Russell had nine kills before being pulled after the second game, while outside attacker Kyle Mars came off the bench to add nine kills.
Penn State in the victory out-hit Ohio State .410 to .218, including having a match-best .500 attack percent in its eight-point third game victory.
Outside attacker Michael Henchy led the Buckeyes in the loss with seven kills and two aces.
This was the first of three matches for both teams in this three-day preseason tournament.
Penn State will continue its home tournament with a match against the Canadian powerhouse Laval at 8 p.m. Friday. Ohio State will play Russia State on Friday.
