USC continued to pick up more individual national accolades — almost sweeping Volleyball Magazine’s top three annual awards.
Trojans outside attacker Tony Ciarelli was named the 2012 Volleyball Magazine Player of the Year, while setter Micah Christenson won the Freshman of the Year award. In addition, USC coach Bill Ferguson and former UC Irvine coach John Speraw both earned the magazine’s Coach of the Year honors.
The Trojans won the MPSF regular season championship and received the lone at-large bid to the four-team NCAA Tournament. USC reached the NCAA championship match before losing to UC Irvine in three games — the third time in the last six that the Anteaters won the national title.
Volleyball Magazine revealed these top individual awards in its July issue. The magazine in the same issue also released its All-American teams.
BYU led all teams with five All-American selections, including outside attacker Taylor Sander and middle attacker Futi Tavana being named First-Team All-Americans. USC and Stanford each had four players earn Volleyball Magazine All-American honors.
