Top 5 men’s volleyball matches to follow tonight

Rematch is the key word tonight in college men’s volleyball.

No. 1 UCLA looks to complete the season series sweep against Hawai’i in the marquee match of the night, while No. 4 BYU looks to avoid another upset scare against Cal Baptist.

1. No. 1 UCLA (13-2, 8-1 MPSF) vs. Hawai’i (6-8, 3-6 MPSF)

What to know: UCLA and Hawai’i will conclude their two-match conference series after the Bruins swept the Warriors in the opener on Friday. UCLA out-hit Hawai’i .408 to .298 in the victory and had two players finish with at least 10 kills. Outside attacker Gonzalo Quiroga had a match-high 16 kills and .762 attack percentage. Hawai’i outside attacker Steven Hunt also had 16 kills and was the only Warrior with more than eight kills. With its loss to UCLA, Hawai’i is on a three-match losing streak. This match will also be the final time Hall of Fame UCLA coach Al Scates, who will retire at the end of the season, will coach a match in Hawaii.

2. No. 3 Stanford (10-2, 7-1 MPSF) vs. UC San Diego (3-10, 1-7 MPSF)

What to know: After starting the road trip last month, Stanford will finish its season-long 10-match road trip as it travels to play a conference match against UC San Diego. The Cardinal are 7-2 during the road trip that has spanned 40 days and almost 4,000 miles of travel. In addition, Stanford swept UC Irvine on Friday to remain a half-match behind UCLA for first place in the MPSF. UC San Diego is in last place in the conference and on a three-match losing streak. The Tritons are also winless at home this season. However, UC San Diego last season pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year as it swept Stanford.

3. IPFW (7-5, 1-1 MIVA) vs. Ball State (7-5, 1-3 MIVA)

What to know: Two teams in desperate need of a victory will face each other in this in-state rivalry. IPFW has won four of its last six matches but was upset by Carthage, ranked No. 1 in the Division III national coaches poll, on Friday. 4. No. 4 BYU (9-3, 6-2) vs. Cal Baptist (3-11)

What to know: BYU after surviving an upset scare Friday will attempt to complete the two-match series sweep against Cal Baptist. The Cougars rallied from a two-game deficit to defeat the Lancers in their series opener. BYU All-American middle attacker Futi Tavana had 11 kills and a match-high seven blocks in the victory. Cal Baptist outside attacker Aaron McCalmont had a match-high 19 kills against BYU. This was also the second consecutive match that the Lancers lost to a top-10 ranked team in five games.

5. No. 2 UC Irvine (9-3, 5-3 MPSF) vs. Pacific (5-8, 3-5 MPSF)

What to know: UC Irvine one day after losing to Stanford will look to rebound with a conference match against Pacific. The Anteaters in the loss were out-hit .463 to .220 as their five-match winning streak ended. Outside attacker Kevin Tillie had a team-high 10 kills and was the only UC Irvine player with double-digit kills in the loss. Pacific swept last-place UC San Diego on Friday to move into a tie for seventh place in the MPSF standings.
