UC Irvine becomes new No. 1 in national media poll

There is a new No. 1 this week in the national media poll.

UC Irvine received eight of 10 first-place votes to jump one spot to No. 1 in the Volleyball Magazine Men’s Division I-II Top 10 Poll that was released Tuesday.

The Anteaters (4-0) won the UC Santa Barbara Invitational championship on Saturday. UC Irvine at the non-conference tournament defeated then-No. 1 BYU in the opening round and then-No. 3 UCLA in the championship match.

UCLA (2-1) received 83 votes — 15 fewer votes than UC Irvine — to move up one spot to No. 2.

BYU (2-1) dropped two spots to No. 3 following its season opening loss to No. 3. The preseason No. 1 ranked team still earned on first-place vote in this week’s poll.

Stanford, which played two exhibition matches last week, remained at No. 4 and was the only other team to receive a first-place vote in the media poll.

The biggest jump in this week’s poll came from Lewis.

Lewis received 19 votes and moved to No. 9 after splitting a two-match series against Pepperdine. The Flyers were unranked in last week’s poll.
