49ers outside attacker Crabb named U.S. captain for World Championship

There will be a new Captain America at the biggest international men’s junior volleyball tournament.

Long Beach State outside attacker Taylor Crabb was selected as the captain of the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team for the 2011 World Championship tournament that starts Monday.

This is the second year Crabb has played for the U.S. Men’s Junior National Team and competed at the international level.

Former All-American Seiffert returns to Long Beach State as assistant coach

A former All-American and member of the last Long Beach State team to win a NCAA championship will join the 49ers coaching staff.

Long Beach State announced Tuesday that Chris Seiffert was hired as an assistant coach for the 2012 season.

Seiffert, a three-time All-American setter, played at Long Beach State from 1997-2000 and as a junior helped lead the 49ers to the 1999 championship. More than a decade since the end of his college career, he remains second all-time in school history with a 17.08 career assists per game average.

Q&A with new BYU head coach Chris McGown

Chris McGown can’t help but have a little flashback every time he enters his BYU coaching office.

As a teenager McGown would run into the same office every week to visit his father, Carl McGown the BYU men’s volleyball head coach. Almost 25 years later it is now the son working out that office — and just like his father working to coach BYU to a NCAA championship.

The Cougars in June hired McGown, an assistant coach with the BYU women’s volleyball team, to become the new head coach of the BYU men’s volleyball team.

Sacred Heart releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about the schedule

The first schedule for a team in the new-look EIVA is out as Sacred Heart announced its 2012 regular season schedule earlier this week.

Sacred Heart, along with the other seven EIVA teams, will play 14 conference matches — a four match increase from last season.

The Pioneers last season finished in third place in the EIVA Hay Division and failed to qualify for the EIVA Tournament. Sacred Heart have four starters returning, including outside attacker Enzo Mackenzie who was named to the Second-Team All-EIVA as a freshman.

Stanford, Rutgers-Newark receive AVCA award for academic excellence

Two NCAA Division I-II men’s volleyball teams received a team national academic honor.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced Thursday that Rutgers-Newark and Stanford earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2010-11 season.

To be eligible for this award a college or high school volleyball team must have at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale or have a 4.10 GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Lewis releases 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about this schedule

Six non-conference matches against teams likely to be nationally ranked highlights Lewis’ 2012 season as the team Wednesday released its regular season schedule for the upcoming season.

Lewis finished last season No. 13 in the final coaches poll and lost to the NCAA champions Ohio State in the MIVA Tournament semifinals. Flyers coach Dan Friend has six starters returning for last year’s team, including First-Team All-MIVA outside attacker Jay Petty.

Big Ten Network to rebroadcast Ohio State vs. UC Santa Barbara title match

A national cable network will rebroadcast Ohio State winning its first national championship.

The 2011 NCAA national championship match between Ohio State and UC Santa Barbara will be rebroadcasted at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday on the Big Ten Network.

The No. 3 seed Ohio State defeated the No. 4 seed UC Santa Barbara in five games in May to win its first national title in program history. With the victory, the Buckeyes also became the first Midwest men’s volleyball team to legally win a NCAA championship.

UCLA, Lewis, Springfield in, Penn State out for 2012 Outrigger Invitational

One of the biggest men’s volleyball non-conference tournaments will have a different look from previous seasons in 2012.

Hawai’i coach Charlie Wade said Thursday that UCLA, Lewis and Springfield College will play in the 2012 Outrigger Invitational in January. It is the first time in the 17-year history of the Hawai’i home tournament that Springfield College will play in it and the first time for Lewis since 2005.

“There is no shortage of teams that want to come out here and play in Hawaii,” Wade said. “It’s going to be fun to play them, and it’s going to be fun for our fans to see some nice teams come out that they don’t normally get to see.”

Long Beach State releases its 2012 schedule: 5 things to know about the schedule

A six-match and seven-match homestand highlights Long Beach State’s 2012 schedule as the team Thursday released its 29-match regular season schedule for the upcoming season.

The 49ers finished last season in sixth place in the MPSF and advanced to the conference tournament semifinals. Long Beach State, which was ranked in the top 10 of the final coaches poll, returns three starters from the 2011 season, including All-MPSF Freshman outside attacker Taylor Crabb.

USC, UC Irvine dominate USA Volleyball beach volleyball rosters for World Games

Five college men’s volleyball players will represent the United States in beach volleyball at the 2011 World University Games.

USA Volleyball announced Wednesday that two men’s teams were selected to compete in the international tournament on Aug. 13-18 in Shenzhen, China.

One of the United States teams will include UC Irvine outside attacker Connor Hughes and USC outside attacker Maddison McKibbin. The other team will consist of USC outside attacker Tony Ciarelli and USC setter Jeff Carlson.
